    Position Overview

    Supports new product development activities in a Research and Development environment by researching and developing new components/assemblies, methods, and/or processes utilizing engineering principles.
     

    Responsibilities

    - Designs printed circuit boards (PCB) for unit. Develops layout of board and determines necessary components in order to make unit operational. Tests board utilizing various equipment (oscope, multimeter, etc.) to ensure it works properly and will support the unit. Conducts design reviews to present PCB layout for evaluation. Makes any necessary design changes and tests new layout to ensure proper functionality. Performs validation testing on all PCBs to determine functionality prior to unit assembly.
    - Troubleshoots electrical systems to determine root cause. Researches various issues to determine appropriate fixes. Repairs and replaces internal electrical components (power supply, controller, etc.) to fix any issues to system. Creates schematics and drawings in CAD to document board design.
    - Analyzes test data and draws conclusions from findings to determine efficiency/reliability of prototypes. Utilizing data in deciding board layout, repairs, etc. Writes technical reports to document investigation procedures and results. Present findings to management. Supports analytical studies on engineering proposals to develop and/or design new products utilizing & applying engineering principles, research data, proposed product specifications.
    - Assists with the preparation of proposals (including recommended suppliers, parts pricing, alternative implementation strategies, and timeline/schedule) for submission to customer. Assists other design staff with answering technical questions during proposal meetings.
    - Prepares system/sub-system layouts & detailed drawings, designs & builds prototype systems/subsystems. Conducts experimental test programs to determine reliability/feasibility of product and to ensure products manufacturability.
    - Creates product specifications and requirements. Ensures products meet specifications by validating specifications. Researches and interacts with suppliers/vendors, requests quotes, and communicates any issues with parts as needed.
    - Provides technical support to the manufacturing departments to troubleshoot and solve production problems related to parts design. Write reports or research proposals and document design process and maintain a record of improvements/changes.
    - Designs printed circuit boards (PCB) for unit. Develops more complex layout of board and determines necessary components in order to make unit operational Recommends and implements process improvements. Automates processes to improve efficiency and productivity. Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses. Supports third party safety testing. Travel’s to vendor site to oversee testing of unit. Operates and makes adjustments to unit as needed. Analyzes data and develops proposal to fix any failures of the unit. Makes adjustments and submits unit for third party retesting to ensure unit operates safely.
    - Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses. Utilizes statistical analysis to ensure process is capable. Generates new concepts/designs and generates proof of concept. Reviews content of technical reports to ensure accuracy and consistency. Trains less experienced Engineers on department processes or systems. Creates, maintains, and drives detailed project schedules across multiple disciplines. Leads projects and/or small teams.
    - Confers with division management, production, QA staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, reliability & manufacturability to new and existing products. Confers with research personnel and/or the customer to clarify or resolve problems of design. Reviews technical reports prepared by less experienced Engineers and provides feedback.
    - Prepares proposals (including recommended suppliers, parts pricing, alternative implementation strategies, and timeline/schedule) for submission to customer. Assists other design staff with answering technical questions during proposal meetings.
    - Creates validation test plan for PCB board to determine proper functionality. Utilizes various tools (oscope, logic analyzer, etc.) to test different elements of board. Collects and analyzes data to determine validity of board. Makes modifications and retests board as necessary. Oversees third party safety testing ensuring test runs smoothly. Utilizes test results to determine necessary modifications to unit. Performs complex statistical analysis of data for complex processes and draws appropriate conclusions. Mentors and trains less experienced Engineers. May travel to customer site as needed for setup/repair of electrical system within unit. May travel for design reviews, customer meetings, trade shows, or other field research. May be assigned additional duties and/or special projects.
     

    Qualifications

    - A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 5-8 years’ experience in research and development, medical or related field.
    - Proficient in Microsoft Office. Ability to create and present presentations and/or technical papers to management within and outside of Canon Virginia. Fluent in an electronic CAD/CAM systems including schematic capture and layout.
    - Experience with embedded systems including hardware and software development tools and standard interface protocols.
    - Experience with C, C++, C# programming languages in MS Windows and Linux environments.
    - Requires ability to debug and trace more complex code problems. Ability to solder for assembly and rework of prototype circuit boards. Requires strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills. May have to travel.
    - Ability to work independently and in a project team environment.
    - May have to work overtime and may be assigned to other shifts based on company needs.
