    Position Overview

    Canon Healthcare Optics Research Laboratory is currently seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to design key mechanical components and systems in the development of new biomedical optical imaging and medical robotics devices, from initial concept through to commercialization, in collaboration with world leading medical institutions.


    - Directly responsible for design, analysis, drafting, fabrication, testing and documentation of key mechanical components and assemblies for prototype development through commercial release.
    - Work closely with industrial designers to ensure the form and function of enclosures and physical interfaces meet mechanical requirements. 
    - Develop components and assemblies that align with the industrial design intent.
    - Ensure components and assemblies meet the appropriate medical device standards.
    - Work with other engineers, including mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineers, to define engineering specifications and conduct system integration.
    - Conduct and document feasibility studies, tolerance analysis, thermal analysis, FEA and other appropriate tests on new and improved designs.
    - Produce production level assembly and part drawings for components and sub-assemblies.
    - Lead and manage mechanical design verification activities.
    - Create and manage the Bill of Materials (BOM) for components and sub-assemblies.
    - Evaluate and make recommendations for the selection of contract manufacturers and suppliers.
    - Provide documentation of inventions for patent applications.
    - Review alternative technology IP as it relates to the design process.


    - BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
    - 5 years of experience in design of products or prototypes of medical device and/or other complex mechanical systems.
    - Excellent modeling and drawing skills using SolidWorks, including advanced surfacing and proficiency with assemblies that contain dozens of parts.
    - Deep experience with design for manufacturability.
    - Proficient with rapid prototyping techniques.
    - Excellent oral, written, and visual communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly to others in different functions, at various levels.
    - Experience working in the medical device industry highly desired.
    - Experience designing both capital equipment and disposables highly desired.
    - Experience working with industrial designers and human factors engineers highly desired.
    - Experience working in a product development firm or design consultancy highly desired.
