Position Overview

Canon USA’s Healthcare Optics Research Lab is a young organization that is gaining momentum. We’re partnering with world class hospitals in the Boston area to turn cutting-edge medical research into usable, meaningful products.  This Principal Software Engineer position is a software development leadership role responsible for the design, implementation and verification of medical imaging software solutions.  It is a hands-on role inventing practical solutions while meeting various functional and non-functional requirements of novel medical imaging devices.

Responsibilities

- Lead the definition of software system architectures, technical solutions, and detailed designs for novel medical imaging devices consisting of software and hardware
- Lead software teams throughout the software development lifecycle, including planning, defining software requirements, architecture design, coding, verification, and software risk management
- Ensure complete documentation adhering to regulations, standards and industry best practices under Design Control 
- Deliver medical-grade software designs and code for the product that meet the defined software requirements and Design Inputs 
- Work closely with Project Managers for planning and execution to meet project check points and milestones
- Work effectively in cross-functional teams consisting of Research, Engineering, QA/RA, and Marketing.
- Provide documentation of inventions for patent applications; review alternative technology as it relates to the invention
- Guide and mentor less experienced team members to foster growth
- Report progress regularly to Upper Management

Qualifications

- Education Required: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline. 
- Experience Required: 10+ years of experience developing real-time software for embedded systems; 5+ years in a software engineering leadership role. 
- Experience designing and managing highly complex, multidisciplinary system of medical device is required. 
- Strong working knowledge of IEC 62304 is required.
- Thorough understanding and extensive application of modern software engineering principles, theories, design concepts and best practices. 
- Proficiency in C/C++ is required. 
- Experience in intellectual property development is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly to other stakeholders in different functions at various levels.
