Position Overview

Supports new product development activities in a R&D environment by researching and developing new components/assemblies, methods and/or processes utilizing engineering principles.


- Designs and builds prototypes for design review. Prepares materials for presentation of prototype and testing procedures for review. Makes any design modifications/ improvements to unit.
- Develops test plans to validate design changes and ensures functionality of product. Collects data from tests and analyzes for errors, failures, and other issues. Writes technical reports to document test procedures and findings. Makes any modifications to product and retests as needed.
- Provides technical support to the manufacturing departments to troubleshoot and solve production problems related to parts design. Troubleshoots unit issues and identifies and/or replaces parts to repair. Investigates issues and resolves problems.
- Supports analytical studies on engineering proposals to develop and/or design new and unique products utilizing & applying engineering principles, research data, and proposed product specifications.
- Evaluates the risk of design aspects and scores risks to determine if design change is effective. Analyzes risk, tolerance, determines feasibility, performs simulation test, and makes design modifications as needed.
- Assists with the preparation of proposals (including recommended suppliers, parts pricing, alternative implementation strategies, and timeline/schedule) for submission to peer review, management and/or customer. Assists other design staff with answering technical questions during proposal meetings.
- Prepares system/sub-system layouts & detailed drawings, designs & builds prototype systems/subsystems. Utilizes Solid Works or ProEngineer to create, design, update and revise product drawings.
- Creates product specifications and requirements. Ensures products meet specifications by verifying and /or validating specifications.
- Researches and interacts with suppliers/vendors, requests quotes, and communicates any issues with parts as needed.
- Writes manufacturing, calibration and/or test procedures. Trains other members on testing, inspecting and assembly processes. Write reports or research proposals and document design process and maintain a record of improvements/changes.
- Develops, designs and builds prototypes for design review. Presents prototype and testing procedures for review.
- Troubleshoots more complex unit issues and identifies and/or replaces parts to repair. Investigates issues and develops countermeasures to prevent future occurrence.
- Develops process improvement initiatives and supports cost down activities for manufacturing process. Identifies alternate solutions based on feasibility, technology or other elements.
- Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses. Utilizes statistical analysis to ensure process is capable.
- Generates new concepts/designs and generates proof of concept.
- Reviews content of technical reports to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Trains less experienced Engineers on department processes or systems.
- Creates, maintains, and drives detailed project schedules across multiple disciplines. Leads projects and/or small teams.
- Confers with division management, production, QA staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, reliability & manufacturability to new and existing products. Confers with research personnel and/or the customer to clarify or resolve problems of design.
- Prepares proposals (including recommended suppliers, parts pricing, alternative implementation strategies and timeline/schedule) for submission to customer. Provides guidance and answers technical questions during proposal meetings.
- Reviews technical reports prepared by less experienced engineers and provides feedback.
- Mentors and trains less experienced engineers.
- May be assigned additional duties and/or special projects.


- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5-8 years’ experience in research and development, medical or related field.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to create and present presentations and/or technical papers to management within and outside of Canon Virginia.
- Fluent in a 3D CAD Package (i.e. Solid Works or ProEngineer).
- Requires analytical, problem solving and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a project team environment.
- May have to work overtime and may be assigned to other shifts based on company needs.
