Position Overview

Canon U.S. Life Sciences is currently seeking an Engineer with experience in Mechanical Engineering and/or Biomedical Engineering. In this position you will develop novel molecular diagnostic devices and assays through rigorous design, testing and analysis.

Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and evaluate performance of molecular diagnostic devices (disposables & instruments).
- Support development of technical product requirements and specifications.
- Work with sources external to the company to identify and implement applicable materials, components and/or technologies.
- Design, build, and test prototype devices as well as experimental test rigs.
- Collaborate with scientists to integrate molecular diagnostic assays into novel devices and workflows.
- Assist scientific team in performing experiments using biological materials in BSL-1/BSL-2 laboratories.
- Present data to small working groups as well as to the larger project teams.
- Work in a dynamic matrix environment with a moderate degree of independence.
- Cooperate with coworkers within an organized team environment and effectively communicate project status to a supervisor.
- Participate in technical design and program reviews.
- Participate in the development of Manufacturing/QC procedures.
- Participate in ongoing surveillance of commercial and scientific literature and conferences to maintain awareness of the latest technologies and relevant techniques.
- Maintain confidentiality of assigned projects.
- Comply with safety, design control, and housekeeping procedures and standards.
- May be required to supervise/mentor interns or other temporary technical personnel.
- Perform such additional assignments as immediate manager may direct.

Qualifications

- B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering or related field is required
- 3-5 years experience in engineering design and/or testing is required
- Experience designing, fabricating, and testing prototype devices is required.
- Experience with computer aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks is required.
- Hands-on experience with machine tools is required
- Demonstrated analytical abilities required for Design of Experiments, statistical data analysis, and scientific data reporting.
- Must be able to maintain impeccable records.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment and ability to function with a moderate degree of independence are required.
- Life sciences roles exist in a laboratory environment; position may involve exposure to biological materials and chemicals. Previous experience with safe handling, storing and disposing of these substances is preferred.
