Position Overview

Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc. is currently seeking an Associate Scientist with experience in microbiology. The incumbent in this position will culture and handle microbial organisms and assist in development of molecular diagnostic assays and instruments. Relevant background includes knowledge of infectious diseases, microbial culture, quantitation, and safe handling of various microorganisms.

Responsibilities

- Culture and quantitate various microorganisms.
- Maintain inventory of frozen stocks of microorganisms.
- Provide testing materials (microorganisms and purified DNA) for development of molecular diagnostic assays and instruments.
- Assist in characterizing and testing the microbial materials by different assay methods (e.g. PCR).
- Assist in lab management tasks, such as material inventory, ordering and equipment maintenance.
- Maintain impeccable records from raw data including data books and computer generated data files, quantitative analysis of data, laboratory protocols, and summary reports.
- Present data to small working groups as well as to the larger project teams.
- Required to handle biological materials, infectious agents and biological wastes. Occasionally may be required to work with hazardous chemicals.
- Work in a dynamic matrix environment with moderate degree of independence. Cooperate with coworkers within an organized team environment and effectively communicate project status to supervisor.
- Assist with special projects as needed.

Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology, Clinical microbiology or Biological sciences with a focus in microbiology.
- 0-2 years bench-level scientific research in academic or industry environment, preferably in the diagnostic or life sciences industry.
- Experience with Microbiology, including culture, maintenance and quantitation of various microorganisms. Experience in Molecular Biology areas including PCR and nucleic acid purification is a plus.
- Experience in working safely with biological materials in BSL-2 environment, including material handling, storage and disposal.
- Strong analytical abilities required for designing experiments, data analysis, and reporting.
- Must be able to maintain impeccable records from raw data including lab notebooks and computer generated data files, quantitative analysis of data, laboratory protocols, and summary reports.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, and the ability to function with moderate degree of independence are required.
